On March 20, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a stark warning in his video message at the press conference to launch the Synthesis Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: humanity is on thin ice, and that ice is melting fast. Guterres emphasized that urgent action is needed from every country and sector to defuse the time-bomb of climate change.
The report is a survival guide for humanity, and Guterres issued a clarion call to fast-track climate efforts by every country and sector before it's too late. To achieve this goal, Guterres proposed a Climate Solidarity Pact which calls on big emitters to cut emissions and wealthier countries to support emerging economies through mobilizing financial and technical resources.
To super-charge efforts to achieve this pact, Guterres presented an all-hands-on-deck Acceleration Agenda. This ambitious plan includes a serious of actions with immediate net-zero deadlines, with developed countries committing to reach net-zero by 2040, and every sector, including shipping, aviation, steel, cement, aluminum, and agriculture, aligning with net-zero by 2050.
